Codes for Sharing Profits with Stakeholders



ZOOM CORPORATION set “going public” as a goal for its first medium-term business plan and “consolidated sales of JPY10 billion” for its second medium-term business plan, and then successfully achieved both. Each milestone could not have been achieved by the Company on its own. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders for their ongoing support and invaluable contributions. Now we address our third medium-term business plan for 2021–2023. As we recognize the importance that stakeholder’s cooperation will be essential for our success, we will focus on “The appropriate profit sharing with all stakeholders” in this plan. While directing your attention to the third medium-term business plan disclosed and posted on the Company’s website, I would like to touch briefly on certain background that were not stated in the plan.

First, the purpose of the plan differs considerably from that of general disclosure materials. Rather than serving as an investment decision-making tool, the plan is positioned as a roadmap for employees and executives to follow. As such, the overall tone is deliberately mission-oriented and instructive.

While outlining the background to define profit sharing with those stakeholders in detail, to put it simply, we recognize the critical need to engage in management based on a set of universal values rather than be swayed by the trends of the time. While difficult to find a single answer to the question “What is justice?” due to differences in positions, values, religious beliefs and historical backgrounds, there must be a universal answer or standard that defines “What is management?” that has been proven over time.

My interest in the principles of universality and standardization began with the issue of “proof” learned during junior high school mathematics. I was enthralled by the task of proving various hypotheses using universal theories, and greatly enjoyed studying mathematics, which my friends disliked. Profoundly impacting my views going forward, I went on to take science courses in high school and electrical engineering in college before entering the workforce and founding my own company. With each step forward, I became increasingly convinced that there must also be an equally exquisite standard like Pythagoras’ theorem in management and business.

While not quite as universal as Pythagoras’ theorem, we have newly established the five Codes of Management. At the same time, we have revised the existing five Codes of Product Development together with the five Codes of Conduct to make them clearer and easier to understand. Looking ahead, we will continue to update each set of the five Codes over the next 100 years as long as the Company exists.* Held in the highest esteem, our hope is that these Codes will one day serve as the de facto standard.
